For storage, paulownia wood. Whether for clothing or food, paulownia boxes have long been used in Japan as reliable storage containers for daily life.
Paulownia is rich in substances with insect-repellent effects such as tannins, paulin, and sesamin. Also, due to its porous structure (many fine holes), it has a high moisture-regulating function. This rice bin, made with luxurious use of thick solid wood, protects your precious staple food from insects and mold in Japanese kitchens, which have high humidity and large seasonal climate fluctuations.
The construction, which uses no nails or metal fittings, is a craftsmanship unique to Kasukabe City, Saitama Prefecture, a renowned production area for paulownia boxes. The sliding door opening allows the entire lid to be removed, making it easy to put in and take out heavy rice, and also easy to clean. You can also store several types of rice separately in cloth bags.
If placed in a cool, dark place with good ventilation, avoiding humid areas or direct sunlight, it can be stored year-round. When the rice runs low, replace it rather than topping it up. At that time, wipe the inside with a tightly wrung-out cloth, dry it thoroughly, and then add the new rice.
